My work begins with an image that produces a sharp and unexpected sensation of recognition. When I feel oscillation or tension between two or more ideas in the image, I start working, trusting that the painting might clarify those ideas and generate new possibilities. Thus, Red Teeth, which at first suggested to me something like "new life and decay" (iris leaves simultaneously growing and being eaten by insects), now might evoke fangs, flames, ghosts...
"The painting is finished as soon as it has erased the idea."
Georges Braque
