About Megan Parry:
For over 25 years I have been designing and painting mural commissions of all
sizes, including very small ones. I work in a broad range of styles, from traditional to contemporary. For most projects, I work alone; for large
jobs, I supervise crews.
Though based in Detroit and New York State, I travel all over the country to
paint in homes and businesses.
About the Work:
Most stencil and mural projects divide neatly into two phases: preliminary
design work and on-site painting. Each is contracted for separately; and occasionally I provide just one of the two services.
Design:
At the beginning of the design phase of a project, I meet with architects/clients/designers to discuss its scale, function, and mood. We
talk about the scope of the design work: will we begin with simple sketches or
with detailed color renderings? Will I prepare more than one idea? Do I need to make 3-dimensional models? When these questions are answered, we execute
a contract for the design phase of the project.
The cost for the design work begins at about $1500 for a small project like a
kitchen floor or bathroom wall, and might reach $5000 or more for an especially
large commission.
Painting:
The painting phase begins with approval of a final design and the particulars of
its execution, such as type of paint and any special equipment or maintenance
needs. If a painting crew is required, we plan for that. We schedule the on-site
painting to coordinate with the needs and convenience of the client. The
painting contract sets forth the work and payment schedules, and ranges from
about $3000 to $15000 for residential work, becoming more expensive for larger
commercial projects.
Most painting is executed in oil paint mixed with an extremely durable
resin-based medium, but I occasionally work with acrylic or epoxy paint. All pigments are chosen for lightfastness and the work usually needs no varnish. |
